Stead McAlpin and Co Ltd is looking for an experienced senior design professional to lead its print design team at their factory in Carlisle. This position will manage and foster the design direction for Stead McAlpin helping it to adapt, evolve and grow with the changing textile print industry.

The ideal candidate is passionate about pattern, print and colour, and is adept at translating market trends to respond to new ideas and innovative design by constantly exploring new ways to improve product offerings.


Provide leadership to grow and nurture the studio’s design direction;

  • Manage and foster creativity in a collaborative team work environment to facilitate creation of high quality designs;
  • Manage and grow a new team of textile designers;
  • Oversee execution of product to agreed upon standards, ensuring a distinctive point of view and value aligned with overall customer strategy;
  • Represent Stead McAlpin’s design philosophy and direction to internal and external partners;
  • Analyse and research industry trends and consumer preferences in support of developing product;
  • Proactively respond to changing business trends and needs by speedy reaction to required changes; lead the development of new products to support increased sales;
  • Manage the development of and adherence to the product development calendar in partnership with internal department and outside vendors;
  • Manage expense budget for the division: monitor and adjust as required;
  • Track sales performance and adjust development strategy as needed.


Degree in Textile Design or related field;

  • Minimum of 5 + years relevant experience working with textiles, concept development, trend foresight, fabric research and development.


  • Demonstrable overall creative expertise, including colour theory and understanding of colour relationships;
  • A strong eye for colour and prints;
  • Exceptional technical knowledge of print and woven textiles/fabrics;
  • Ability to establish and drive end-to-end design strategy and initiatives;
  • Inspirational and visionary leader
  • Demonstrable success at leading a collaborative design team environment
  • Strong planning, presentation and analytical skills;
  • Extensive knowledge of the market and trend analysis;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Ability to recognize and react to changing work demands, effectively manage time, and prioritize work to meet deadlines.
  • Have passion for design & colour.
  • Have demonstrable knowledge of the separation processes and technical issues relating to Textile design.
  • Have knowledge of the requirements and processes involved in flatbed and Rotary engraving as well as Digital print preparation techniques.
  • People management skills especially regarding encouraging and motivating repportees towards achieving deadlines.
  • Proven ability to communicate with customers.
  • Proven and demonstrable Software and keyboard skills  - Photoshop and  AVA preferred.
  • Digital print knowledge/experience
  • An understanding of the Market Place/Design and where Stead McAlpin fit.
  • Must hold a valid UK driving licence and be prepared for significant national and occasional international travel.
  • Must be able to live and work in the UK.
